Having a website is one thing. Having a website that makes the phone ring is another. Plenty of small business owners tell us the same story: “We have a site, people seem to visit it, but we hardly ever get an enquiry from it.”

The good news is that the reasons are usually simple, and most of them can be fixed in an afternoon. Here are the ones we see most often.

1. Visitors can’t tell what you do within five seconds

When someone lands on your homepage, they decide almost instantly whether they’re in the right place. A headline like “Welcome to our website” or “Quality you can trust” tells them nothing. A headline like “Emergency plumbing and boiler repairs, same-day call-outs” tells them everything.

The fix: make your main heading say what you do and who you do it for. Save the clever slogans for later on the page.

2. There’s no obvious next step

If a visitor has to hunt for your phone number or scroll to the bottom to find a contact form, many of them won’t bother. Every page should make it obvious what to do next.

The fix: put a clear button near the top of every page (“Get a quote”, “Book a call”, “Check availability”) and repeat it further down. On mobile, make your phone number tappable.

3. The site is slow or awkward on a phone

Most local searches happen on phones. If your pages take a long time to load, or the text is tiny and the buttons are hard to tap, people go back to the search results and pick the next business.

The fix: open your own site on your phone, on mobile data, and try to contact yourself. If anything is frustrating, it’s costing you customers.

Quick test: ask a friend who has never seen your site to find your prices and send you an enquiry, using only their phone. Watch where they hesitate. That’s where you’re losing people.

4. There’s nothing that builds trust

People are cautious about hiring someone they don’t know. If your site has no reviews, no photos of real work, and no information about who you are, it feels risky to get in touch.

The fix: add a handful of genuine reviews, real photos of your work or premises, and a short “about us” section with a face and a name.

5. The contact form asks for too much

Every extra field on a form is another reason to give up. Asking for a full address, budget, preferred date and a detailed description before someone has even spoken to you is a big ask.

The fix: keep the form to name, contact details and a short message. You can ask for the rest when you reply.

6. Your information is out of date

Old opening hours, a service you no longer offer, a “latest news” post from three years ago. Small things like these make visitors wonder whether you’re still trading.

The fix: check your site every few months and remove anything that’s no longer true.

7. Nobody is finding it in the first place

Sometimes the problem isn’t the site at all; it’s that very few of the right people ever see it. If your pages don’t mention the services you offer and the area you cover, search engines have little reason to show you.

The fix: make sure each main service has its own clear section or page, and that your location is mentioned naturally in the text.

The bottom line

A website that brings in enquiries isn’t about flashy design. It’s about clarity: saying what you do, proving you’re trustworthy, and making it effortless to get in touch. Fix those three things and most sites start pulling their weight.
